A new era of the Jurassic saga is here. Universal just announced that the next Jurassic World movie is called Jurassic World Rebirth, and we finally know what it’s about.
“Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs,” the official plot description reads. “Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”
Scarlett Johansson stars this time around, along with Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, and others. Here’s how she fits in. “Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs,” says the press release. “When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.” Here’s your first look at an image from the film.
It sounds oddly like a mix of Jurassic Park III and The Lost World, does it not? The idea of a family stranded. The idea of trained professionals knowingly going into an area overrun by dinosaurs. All the ingredients are there for a big, fun, Jurassic World movie. And while the decision to make the dinosaurs from the previous three films not fit in with the planet’s ecology probably makes the most sense, it’s also just a tiny big disappointing. Wouldn’t it have been cool to see a world where there was a bit more integration? Wasn’t that the ultimate promise of Jurassic World Dominion? Still, “Rebirth” obviously suggests this is just the beginning for this story and these characters, so who knows where this could go next. Anything is better than Dominion.
So who plays who here? Well, Oscar-winner Ali is “Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team leader,” Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Bridgerton) is paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis; Rupert Friend (Homeland, Obi-Wan Kenobi) is a “Big Pharma representative” named Martin Krebs; and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer, Murder on the Orient Express) plays Reuben Delgado, “the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.”
Beyond that, Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs. Lopez) are the stranded Reuben family. Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool) are all also part of Zora’s crew.
Rogue One, Creator, and Godzilla director Gareth Edwards at at the helm, directing a script from the original film screenwriter David Koepp. Steven Spielberg is among the executive producers. The film opens in July 2025. Here’s your title reveal.
